ABOUT US:
Lone Star Karate & Self-Defense is the Richmond, Texas branch of the
Zen-Do Kai International organization. Once a branch of Safety America,
Sensei Robert Gifford asked Todd Kelly to take over as the school's sensei
in April of 2007.
Upon taking over as Sensei, Todd renamed the school with help from his
students and incorporated elements of his (now sister) school, Safety
America, and parent organization, Zen-Do Kai.
Sensei Kelly is a Houston-area attorney who began Karate with his
children as a way of staying active, and participating in activities with his
children. Shortly after beginning his journey to Black Belt, he realized that
this Karate school is really an extension of his "family".

Zen-Do Kai Creed:
I will conduct myself in a manner which will reflect credit upon myself and society.
I will be loyal to my school and to the art it teaches.
I will be honest and develop cooperation and trust with my fellow students and instructors.
I will never abuse my knowledge and will use Karate only in defense of my own and my loved
ones lives.

What our Students say:
"Lone Star Karate's History has been one of dedication and hard work of
the students and quality insight and instruction of the teachers. The
atmosphere at Lone Star Karate can be described as supportive, and
comfortable. The dojo becomes like a second home, where everyone is
encouraged to improve as we train together and learn from one another."
"Great and supportive atmosphere that anyone will enjoy. Lone Star is
more than just a karate school, but a family of hard working people that
motivate and support one another."
"Five years ago, I walked into what is now Lone Star Karate simply
because I drove by the school and it caught my eye. From the first
moment, I was greeted by students and instructors alike with courtesy,
warmth, and friendship. Today, I still take classes at Lone Star Karate in
the same welcoming atmosphere. This is not a group of
hyper-competitive, take-every-tournament-by-storm, "get your blackbelt
as fast as you can" group of people. Each student, regardless of age, is
encouraged to grow physically, mentally, and socially at their own pace
and not to define themselves and others as a belt color. This is the reason
we have so many students who continue to train and teach long after they
have achieved thier black belt, whereas other martial arts schools I have
been familiar with see their students drop out after black belt...those
students no longer see any reason to come back! I appreciate every one
of the students and instructors at Lone Star Karate. They are not just
fellow students and teachers but my friends. I also thank Sensei Kelly for
his commitment to maintaining the welcoming and inviting atmosphere at
the school."
